Focus
on What You are Practicing– “getting in
the practice zone”
To focus means to close or narrow attention.
Another way to say it is concentration or a condition
in which something can be clearly perceived. I know
people who like to practice while watching television.
I submit to you that if you are trying to learn something
new or grow in your playing ability, you can’t
practice effectively while watching TV. You can noodle
around and play the stuff you already know, but not
really get into new stuff.
Golfers
talk about getting into a zone. As a matter of fact,
many great athletes talk about getting into the
zone. I believe you can accomplish your most effective
practice when you are in the zone.
What
is the Zone? When you're in the zone you are so focused
on what you are practicing or playing that your awareness
is enhanced in a way that is difficult to explain. Your
confidence increases and it seems you can accomplish
major improvements (make major strides) while in that
state of mind. So, how do you get there? First of all,
this isn't something you can force. But, you can increase
the odds of getting there by making it a habit to do
the following 4 things.
- No
distractions! Shut yourself off from the rest of the
world during practice time.
- Focus!
All your attention should be on the thing you are
trying to play.
- Relax!
Trying to focus might cause you to become tense. You
must control that tendancy. Eventually you will associate
relaxing with focusing your attention.
- Approach
your practice time patiently and methodically...
